For those who haven’t heard, I got a job at a local (Pittsburg, KS) news station KOAM and KFJX. KOAM is easily the best station in the area and I am very excited to be working there. As I type this however, I am sitting in the newsroom trying to look productive. At times I feel that everyone else has a job to do but at times my job is to simply look busy. I go out and film news as requested, go with my reporter and cover his stories, but when that is done, I sit in the newsroom and wonder what to do. I am torn. I should be here ready to leave at a moment’s notice should news come in, but feel sometimes that I am wasting time, and my employer’s money, by sitting here doing nothing. This seems to be the norm however as I have been told in the past to, “log on to Facebook” when waiting in the newsroom. It may be that I will end up simply blogging more often, which would be great for those few of you who follow me (thanks). The absolute worst is when I’m in the newsroom and they do a live shot from here. Then I have to look busy ON CAMERA.
The job itself is actually pretty awesome. I drive to work everyday wondering what I will get to do, what I will cover, what new place I will go to and see. In eight days I have covered a garage that had collapsed on a man, fake marijuana (a drug bust over $71k), fires (almost caught the company car on fire YAY brush fires), done a ride along with Joplin Police (had a guy not want to be on camera so much that he called the station and threatened to sue lol), and other fun things. I guess this is just a “hurry up and wait” type job.
